The Big Questions.

Sometimes, when a person maintains a blog about the most mundane parts of her life, she loses sight of the bigger questions. This is why it's a good idea to shake up your routine now and then, children: hang out with other humans. Try a new type of lettuce*.

This weekend, I ventured out of my comfort zone, and I found myself face to face with one of those eternal questions that have kept humans tossing and turning for centuries: will a seat belt keep a caged cat safer?
While I can't answer that question definitively, I can tell you that this particular cat didn't die during the course of this particular car ride. Oh, and the ketchup we purchased on the same trip?
It ended up in a crusty stain all over my dress. Which is why we can't have nice things.

*After years of buying green leaf, I decided to give red leaf a whirl--and boy was I blown away! It's leagues better--and not a penny more expensive! I just wish past Brenna had known sooner.

Our Newest Roommate.

To be honest, children, I thought one of you (most likely the oldest) would be the first roommate your father and I ever brought into our lives. But that was before I met Maisie.

Meet Maisie.
Ever since she first darted into my peripheral vision while I was typing at my computer, I knew that we lived in the same house. But it was only later that I realized that made us honest-to-goodness roommates.

Maisie & me, just hanging out near a wall.
At first, I thought I would most likely murder Maisie, as I had done to so many of her brethren (sistren?) over the years. But after naming her, murder began to seem increasingly undesirable. So we struck upon a truce: she would kill and devour any insect intruders (or as she calls them, "squatters") she came across, and I would let her live. With us.

Thumbs up for inter-species friendship!

I have no regrets, though since our first full day of friendship, I haven't seen much of Maisie. And honestly, it doesn't bother me excessively. Let's just hope she doesn't try to pull this disappearing shit when the rent's due.

Your Father Adopts a Hunting Hound.

After a riveting business trip during which I posted absolutely nothing about my everyday life on the road, I'm back in town and I've got lots to report.

Children, you know very well that I am highly allergic to animals of all kinds (as well as all things that bring joy to humans, including Christmas trees and possibly ice cream). However, your father does not seem to care.

In fact, this weekend, he adopted a hunting hound as his new Official Best Friend.

He also adopted a sidekick, in the form of an absurdly cute two-year-old girl. I can only imagine what world-saving adventures they will get up to in the coming months and years. What a team.

Everyday Lifer in the Big City (Part 1).

Children, I missed a day of informing you about my life. But with good reason: I spent the last four days in New York City, which was known as "The Big Apple" to people who had never been there until it was washed into the sea by global warming.

The first stop on my grand visit was a day of work, because life is not all fun and games, children. Here I am doing my freelance writing while a cat befriends me despite my clear dislike for her. (Her name is Mister Schweems, which caused me a great deal of confusion, but she is, in fact, female.)

This is your Auntie Lucia, grading her students' papers. How studious are we!

But once the work had been dispensed with, the (real) fun began.

My friends and I visited a rooftop beer garden so fancy I had no choice but to wear a feathered fascinator to fit in!

And of course, fit in I did. For this was no ordinary beer garden. It was an intellectual beer garden. As you can see.
